Jackson Hinds Library System Appoints New Executive Director

The Jackson Hinds Library System (JHLS) Board of Trustees has named Jeanne Williams as its next Executive Director, effective June 16, 2025.

Williams, a native of Lumberton, Mississippi, holds a Master of Library and Information Science and a Master of Arts in Anthropology from the University of Southern Mississippi. She brings more than 20 years of experience to the role, including her most recent position as Public and Tribal Library Consultant for the Washington State Library. Her career has emphasized community partnerships, staff development, and the role of libraries as inclusive community spaces.

In a statement, Williams said, “I’m honored to join the Jackson Hinds Library System at the start of a new chapter. With a clear vision for the future and a new strategic plan, this is a time of renewed purpose and possibility. I look forward to working alongside our dedicated staff and Board to bring that vision to life for all the communities we serve. I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to serve with JHLS.”

As Executive Director, Williams will lead implementation of the library system’s newly adopted 2025–2030 Strategic Plan. The plan includes six focus areas: facility upgrades, improved communications and outreach, financial sustainability, expanded collections, strengthened community programming, and investment in staff and leadership.

Attorney Peyton Smith, Chair of the JHLS Board of Trustees, said, “The Board of Trustees is thrilled to welcome Jeanne Williams to the Jackson Hinds Library System. Her expertise in public library service, community building, and state-of-the-art facilities development are just what we need to lead the Library into the future.”

Smith also acknowledged the efforts of the search committee, chaired by Attorney Bob Owens and including David Burks, Paul Forster, Othor Cain, and Dionne Nicole Burks.

The board partnered with the Bradbury Miller firm to conduct a nationwide search. “Everyone that was involved in this process, we cannot thank you enough,” Smith said.

Board member Dionne Nicole Burks, who represents Ward 2 and served on the search committee, added, “I’m especially excited about the changes underway—upgrading our libraries and launching a bookmobile to reach underserved communities. Our board and staff have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to improve the experience for all patrons, and we’re thrilled to welcome a leader who’s invested in our community and brings innovative, collaborative thinking to the table.”
